YOGYAKARTA, KalderaNews.com – With the theme “Empowering Next Generation English Educators: Challenges and Opportunities,” the 11th annual Language and Language Teaching Conference (LLTC) was held, focusing on the perspectives of teachers in using technology for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching.

The use of technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), in education often sparks controversy regarding its implementation and integration into learning due to its fluid nature. AI can be both a highly beneficial and potentially detrimental tool, depending on how it is applied.

However, this ultimately depends on the policies guiding its use in teaching and learning processes.

RELATED TOPICS:

At least two key questions were addressed during the conference: First, will AI replace teachers? Second, what does the future hold for AI in education?

The answers to these questions remain open-ended. AI could replace teachers in the future if the role of the teacher is limited to merely providing information. On the other hand, the teacher’s role will never be fully replaced if they act as learning companions, facilitators, and providers of feedback on learning performance.

Furthermore, AI can be incredibly beneficial if integrated as an assistance tool for designing, monitoring, and evaluating the learning process.

The LLTC, held on November 7-8, 2024, at the Driyarkara Auditorium Seminar Room of Sanata Dharma University, is a regular event organized by the English Education Program (PBI), in collaboration with the Master’s programs in English Language Education (MPBI) and English Studies (KBI), as well as supported by the Language Institute. The conference focuses on best practices and the use of technology in education, alongside other relevant topics.

This year, LLTC invited three keynote speakers: Professor Paul Kei Matsuda from Arizona State University, Prof. Jaeshil Kim, Ph.D., from Liberty University, and Agustinus H. Prasetyo, S.Pd., Ph.D., from Sanata Dharma University. LLTC 2024 featured 76 presentation topics by 100 presenters and attracted 134 participants from eight different countries (Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Thailand, USA, Rwanda, China, and Timor Leste) with diverse backgrounds.

LLTC 2024 serves as a platform for educators, researchers, and practitioners to share valuable perspectives on multidisciplinary themes related to technology in education, learner-centered education, the development and use of technology in the learning process, and other topics related to language, language teaching, and mental health.
