JAKARTA, KalderaNews.com – The Acting Governor of Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, accompanies the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, during the Kick-Off Event for the Indonesian Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023 at the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout, Central Jakarta, on Sunday (29/1).

President Joko Widodo symbolically opened the Indonesian Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023 by striking the rebana biang (great tambourine) traditional instrument at the venue. The event was witnessed by thousands of local residents, forming crowds near the main stage.

During the occasion, President Joko Widodo conveyed three important things in Indonesia’s election to the 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship. One of which is to stay relevant to the interests of the people.

“First, ASEAN must remain relevant to the interests of the people, as well as the region and the world. Second, ASEAN must make a major contribution to stability and peace in the Indo-Pacific region. Third, ASEAN must have to be the epicenter of economic growth,” the President explained.

According to the President, these three points are important for various reasons, such as less than favorable global conditions, uncertainties in the dynamics of the world, geopolitical influences, economic crises, food crises, and energy crises.

“We still have to be optimistic. The chairmanship of ASEAN must foster optimism,” he said.

Meanwhile, Acting Governor Heru stated Jakarta’s readiness to host international events related to the chairmanship. “Jakarta is ready to support and make this international activity a success.

We in Jakarta will consistently coordinate with the Central Government in order to compile and conceptualize the events, which will intensify from May to December,” said Acting Governor Heru.

Not only that, Acting Governor Heru also asked for public support to enliven the series of events which will end on December 31.

“We urge all Jakarta residents to be involved in the success of this international event. This will not only be a representation of Indonesia to the eyes of the world, but also a potential for growth in stimulating the economy for MSMEs in Jakarta,” he added.

This Kick-Off event is a collaboration of the Provincial Government of Jakarta and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Coinciding with Motor Vehicle Free Day, the event brings a different and livelier atmosphere with the Nusantara Parade. The colorful parade consists of marching bands, carnival costume paraders, percussion music groups, and Jakarta folk art performers, such as Betawi dance groups and ondel-ondel performers.

After a leisurely cycling session accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, and a number of Ministers from the Palace in front of Sarinah, President Joko Widodo joined the Parade, walking together towards the HI Roundabout.

The total parade involved more than 500 people representing various groups, namely the Mawar Budaya studio group, Jakarta Music House, Jakarta Ceremonial Flag Raising Troops (Paskibra DKI Jakarta), students from a number of Jakarta high schools, the Altajuru music group, and the Jakarta Fire Department. Participating in the Parade ranks were Ambassadors of friendly countries and representatives of international organizations.

The highlight of the day is the entertainment stage which was enlivened by a number of artists such as Rara Lida, Putra Lida, and Maria Callista.

The handover of the ASEAN Chairmanship from Cambodia to Indonesia was carried out at the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh in November 2022. The period of Indonesia’s chairmanship in ASEAN itself begins on 1st January 2023 and will last for a year until 31st December 2023.

As one of the founding countries of ASEAN and the largest country in ASEAN, stakeholders pinned their hopes on Indonesia to make significant breakthroughs and innovations in dealing with various world problems which also challenges the region.

Through the theme of ASEAN Chairmanship, namely: “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth”, Indonesia is determined to direct the ASEAN cooperation in 2023 to continue and strengthen ASEAN’s relevance in responding to regional and global challenges, as well as strengthening ASEAN’s position as the center of regional economic growth, for the prosperity of the people of ASEAN.

The Kick-Off Event is being held ahead of the series of ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meetings on 3-4th February 2023, which will take place at the ASEAN Secretariat Building, Jakarta.
